CS/IT Seminar: Journals

What does Peer Reviewed mean?

When journal or periodicals are referred to as being peer reviewed it means that someone with knowledge in given field (a peer) has had a chance to review the material prior to publication. Typically an article is sent to a journal and the editor sends it out to scholars in the same (the author's peers) field.  The peer reviewers may center their attention on any of the following:

  • Methodology

  • Resources used

  • Results or Findings

  • Conclusions

Following the read through the reviewer will decide whether to accept the manuscript as is, request that revisions be made as a condition for publication, or decline to publish the manuscript.

However, just because an article is in a peer reviewed journal does not mean it has been peer-reviewed; especially if it is an editorial, book review or other opinion section.
